While every local business has their own unique marketing circumstances, there is no question mobile phone search is now an important consideration in internet marketing and SEO strategies

Mobile Phone Search – Mobile Friendly SEO

Mobile phone search is the newest apple in Google’s eye. Pigeon, Penguin, Hummingbird and other algorithm updates affecting SEO and internet marketing have affected many businesses over the past couple of years – often causing sleepless nights. Here’s a heads up from the official Google Webmaster’s Central Blog about mobile friendly search.

Google Singles Out Mobile Phone Search

In the past, Google “recommended” certain ways for websites to be coded for mobile friendly use. But, they never stated it was a ranking factor. “Mobile friendly” sites have always been more of a usability issue and a best practice. However, mobile phone search makes sense from a conversion perspective. If a consumer is on the move, performing a mobile phone search, making it easy to find and read information about your business is smart. Restaurants are an obvious beneficiary of this focus. But companies with showrooms or materials pick up can also benefit from optimizing for a mobile phone search.

Google says, “starting on April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.” In other words, your mobile SEO will no longer rely completely on what you do for your regular website. It ensure mobile SEO has a good foundation, you should build a mobile site.

Is this important to your online visibility? I’ll answer that with a question of my own. Ask yourself, ‘how much of my traffic comes from mobile devices?’ If your site is not optimized for mobile phone search, you might assume your traffic will be curtailed.

I have clients ranging from selling to consumers to business to business and local to national. As a group, their mobile search results range from 15% of their traffic to 40%. Having poor Mobile SEO could potentially have a negative on your marketing efforts.

Mobile Phone Search Also Offers Opportunity

On the other hand, getting your mobile phone search capabilities and other SEO issues corrected can create superior results because it is safe to assume there will be many people dragging their feet. It seems it’s the nature of the Google updates that people don’t believe they have to make changes … until their SEO suffers.

My advice is to make your mobile phone search changes sooner rather than later, protect your SEO and take advantage of those who are late to the party.
